My experience with Raise the Reef has left me questioning the consistency and transparency of some product recommendations.

I have screenshots of previous comments made by the owner regarding DD Funktion pumps, where he stated that two pumps had failed within six months and that he would never buy them again. More recently, after Raise the Reef began stocking DD products, the same pump range appeared as stock items and was being recommended.

When I asked whether his opinion of the pumps had changed and shared the earlier comments for clarification, I was subsequently removed from the Raise the Reef WhatsApp group.

At the time of writing, I have asked for an explanation but have not yet received one. It is therefore possible there are reasons for my removal that I am unaware of.

However, from my perspective as a hobbyist, this experience has reduced my confidence in the objectivity of the recommendations associated with the group. If opinions on products change, I believe it is entirely reasonable for customers and hobbyists to ask what changed and why.

I have no issue with businesses stocking products they previously criticised if new information or experience has changed their view. In fact, changing one’s opinion when presented with new evidence is perfectly reasonable. What concerns me is the apparent unwillingness to discuss or explain those changes when questioned.

For me, transparency and open discussion are important parts of building trust within the reefing community.
