The UK has a fantastic reefing scene. We have specialist coral farms, independent marine shops, home-grown coral sellers and larger aquatic retailers spread across the country.

The problem isn’t necessarily a lack of choice.

The problem is finding that choice.

A coral you have been looking for might be sitting on the website of a retailer you have never visited before. A fish might be available from several different shops at different prices. A new batch of corals may have appeared this morning, but unless you happen to check that particular retailer, you may never see them.

UK Reef Market on CoralBay UK was built to make that discovery much easier.

Instead of visiting dozens of individual retailer websites, UK Reef Market brings products from UK reef retailers together into one searchable market.

At the time of writing, CoralBay is looking across 80+ UK reef retailers, with thousands of products being discovered and refreshed regularly.

The emphasis is particularly on the things reef keepers tend to hunt for:

UK Reef Market is designed to show products that appear to be currently in stock and available to buy. Where a retailer identifies a product as out of stock or on back order, we try to exclude it from the market.

Because product information comes from many different retailer websites and stock can change at any time, an unavailable item may occasionally slip through. That isn’t intentional. Our aim is to make UK Reef Market a view of what you can actually buy now, rather than a catalogue of products that are no longer available.

The important part is that CoralBay is not trying to become the retailer.

The Price Changes section highlights products whose latest recorded price differs from the previous observation.

You can concentrate specifically on:

• price reductions, or
• price increases.

Products can also display a small Price Up or Price Down indicator when the most recent observations show a change.

This isn’t intended to turn reef keeping into stock-market trading!

It simply gives you information that would otherwise be very difficult to notice when browsing dozens of separate websites.

Look at price history

Where CoralBay has historical observations for a product, you can open its Price History.

Rather than filling the screen with an entry for every day on which nothing happened, the history focuses on meaningful price changes.

This means you might see a history such as:

Earlier Price → £60
25 August → £55
2 September → £49

It gives useful context without unnecessary noise.

Search all shops – or only the shops you want

By default you can explore the wider market, but sometimes you may want to concentrate on particular retailers.

Open Select shops and choose the shops you want included.

You can also use the exclusion mode when you want to search broadly while leaving particular retailers out.

This can be especially useful if you are comparing several favourite shops or concentrating on retailers you already buy from.

Narrow the results

UK Reef Market isn’t just a giant wall of products.

You can combine market browsing with search and filters to narrow what you see.

Depending on the current tools available, you can use options such as:

One of the things we particularly like about this idea is that discovery does not have to depend entirely on how famous a retailer is.

A smaller coral farm may not have the advertising budget, social following or Google presence of a large aquatic retailer.

What happens when a price changes?

CoralBay Intelligence – the system behind UK Reef Market – observes product information as shops are refreshed.

When the latest recorded price differs from the previous recorded price, UK Reef Market can identify that as a recent price movement.

That is what drives the Price Up and Price Down indicators and the Price Changes market view.

Historical changes can then be used to build a more useful price history for that product.

Importantly, a product isn’t permanently labelled as having just dropped in price simply because it became cheaper months ago. The recent price-change indicator relates to the latest observations.

How fresh is the information?

Our aim is to refresh retailer data regularly, with the main focus on marine livestock such as corals, fish and invertebrates.

UK Reef Market is intended to show products that are currently available to buy. Products identified by retailers as out of stock or on back order are normally excluded from the market.

However, CoralBay is looking across many independent retailer websites, all of which handle stock information differently. A product can also sell between CoralBay checking a shop and you visiting it.

Occasionally an unavailable product may therefore appear in the market despite our efforts to filter it out.

The retailer’s website is always the final authority on current stock, price, delivery information and product details.

Does CoralBay sell these products?

No.

This distinction is worth repeating.

Products discovered through UK Reef Market remain products of their respective retailers.

When you click through, you visit the retailer.

Any purchase is then made according to that retailer’s own website, checkout, delivery terms and policies.

UK Reef Market is about discovery.

What if my favourite reef shop isn’t there?

The UK reef trade is much larger and more varied than many people realise.

CoralBay already maintains a dedicated UK Reef Shops directory covering marine aquarium shops, coral specialists and independent sellers around the country.

UK Reef Market is being expanded progressively as retailers can be reliably discovered and their publicly available product information can be interpreted correctly.

Not every retailer will necessarily be available in UK Reef Market, and different websites present their catalogues in very different ways.
