CoralBay UK has introduced experimental collection-only community coral auctions.

The idea is simple: reef hobbyists can optionally place their Community Coral listings into a timed auction instead of using one of the existing Community Coral formats such as fixed-price listings or fixed-price listings with a make-an-offer option.

Why collection-only?

Collection-only auctions help reduce many common problems associated with online transactions.
By arranging:

  • in-person collection
  • direct communication
  • payment during collection

buyers and sellers gain significantly more transparency.
This approach also:

  • reduces shipping risks
  • reduces DOA concerns
  • discourages scams
  • encourages local reef communities

The feature is currently experimental and intentionally limited to collection-only transactions while the system evolves and feedback is gathered.
If auctions prove popular and reliable within the reefing community, CoralBay UK may expand the system further in the future — potentially including delivery-based auctions as well.

Flexible choice for sellers

Users posting corals in the Community Corals section can choose between:

  • a normal fixed-price listing
  • a fixed-price listing with a make an offer option
  • or a timed collection-only auction

This allows sellers to decide which format suits their coral, location and preferences best.

How auctions work

Sellers can:

  • enable auction mode
  • set a starting price
  • choose auction duration

During the auction:

  • the coral disappears from normal Community Coral listings
  • only logged-in users can bid
  • bids are recorded
  • audit logs track auction actions

At the end of the auction:

  • the highest bidder wins
  • buyer and seller receive contact details
  • collection and payment are arranged privately

Accountability and logging

CoralBay UK auctions include logging systems to improve transparency.
Actions such as:

  • auction creation
  • cancellations
  • bid placement
  • auction endings

are recorded for admin review.
